Commonwealth Youth Games Fact Sheet

Boxing Background • Sport England provides the strategic lead for sport in England. The Amateur Boxing Association is one of Sport England’s 30 key sports selected for prioritised investment over the next four years, starting in April 2005. This investment assists the sport at all levels from playground to podium, funding grass-roots programmes, coaching, sports facilities and elite athletes. • Sport England is working closely with the Amateur Boxing Association to develop a Whole Sport Plan with specific objectives to get more people to start, stay and succeed in Boxing. World Class Funding Programme • The World Class Funding Programme currently provides Lottery funded grants to elite athletes. Each National Governing Body of Sport including the Amateur Boxing Association, submits a World Class Plan every four years, identifying elite athletes to be funded by the programme. The funding gives them the opportunity to achieve consistent success in major international competition. • The programme currently comprises three key parts: World Class Start, designed to support talent identification and nurturing of that talent; World Class Potential, designed to assist in the development of talent; World Class Performance, designed to support elite preparation and performance at senior international levels. • Sport England currently funds individuals from Boxing who are on the World Class Start, World Class Potential and World Class Performance programmes. • There are currently 1793 Sport England Lottery funded athletes on the World Class Programme. From this figure, 58 compete in Boxing, with 22 on the World Class Start programme, 19 on the World Class Potential Programme and 17 on the World Class Performance Programme.
